Alphabet & counting activities for children

Kids love demonstrating their ABC and 123 abilities and you can

devise various activities to assist in developing these essential skills.

  • Sing the alphabet song.

  • Count fingers and toes, books, toys, blocks, items of just one colour or anything else you can think of.

  • Get your child to find a set number of items around the home such as 5 round things, 10 red things or beginning with the letter "R".

  • Make your own number and alphabet flash cards.

  • Have your child place alphabet or numerical cards or blocks in order.

  • Prepare stencils with numbers, the alphabet or familiar words (such as their name) to trace over, copy or colour in.

  • Cut out letters and numbers from magazines and glue in alphabetical order or spell out new words.

  • Choose one letter and draw or cut and out and paste pictures from a magazine of items beginning with this letter.

  • Buy, download or create your own crossword and "find a word" puzzles.
